Seoul, South Korea: Three weeks of trials with an Alexander Dennis Limited Enviro500 double deck bus in Gyeonggi Province have concluded with an overwhelmingly positive response from passengers, drivers and operating companies. Hundreds of passengers per day had the opportunity to travel in the double deck on inter-urban routes between Suwon and Sadang; Namyang and Jamsil; and Gimpo and Seoul Station throughout December 2014.

The trials featured the high-capacity, three-axle Enviro500 vehicle manufactured by Britain’s Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), the world’s leading supplier of double deck buses, notably in London, Hong Kong and across North America.

Speaking at a briefing held at the British Embassy in Seoul this week, Paul Davies, Director and General Manager of ADL’s Asia Pacific operations, commented: “The double deck trial was borne out of a search for buses with a higher seating capacity to meet the needs of the daily commuters. What we’ve proven is that the Enviro500 not only fulfils this basic requirement, it also brings with it many other benefits – most notably the improved access for wheelchair users, excellent fuel efficiency, outstanding manoeuvrability and the fact that it can carry twice as many seated passengers as the current single deck buses.”

The early indicators from online research commissioned by ADL prove that the double deck was well received, with over 90% of respondents welcoming their introduction. Reasons for this include passenger enjoyment of travelling on the upper deck and the comfortable, spacious interior with increased seating capacity. On an operational level, the Enviro500 easily travelled on the designated routes without any infrastructure issues and the drivers adapted quickly to the characteristics of the Enviro500, which are very similar to those of single deck buses.

ADL사에서 의뢰해 실시한 초기의(아무래도 시운전 초기를 지칭하는 듯 싶습니다.) 여론조사는 2층버스가 잘 수용되었고, 응답자의 90% 이상이 2층버스의 도입을 찬성하다는 결과를 도출해 냈다. 이 이유들 중에는 2층에 탑승하는 승객들의 "재미(?)"와 더 많은 좌석과 함께하는 편리하고 특이한 인테리어도 있다. 시운전 기간 동안, Enviro500 차량은 구조물 문제 없이 지정된 노선을 쉽게 왕복했으며, 운전자들도 기존의 단층(1층) 버스와 거의 비슷한 Enviro500의 특징에 신속히 적응했다.

Davies continued, “We look forward to working with Gyeonggi Provincial Government, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Gyeonggi Research Institute as the project moves to the next phase.”

Davies 본부장은 계속해서 평했다. "저희는 경기도 지방정부, 국토교통부, 그리고 경기인력개발원과 지속적으로 시운전을 시행하는 것에 대해 긍정적으로 바라보고 있습니다."
